Camps Counselor

Summary

Positions Supervised: None

Supervised by: Counselor Team Leader

Budget Impact: $300.00 a week plus room and board per position

Responsible to lead and supervise a group of 8 to 20 campers in conjunction with a partner on a round-the-clock basis. Assist and guide the campers in the planning and execution of their daily activities while identifying and meeting the needs of each camper.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide for the spiritual, moral, physical, and social growth of the campers.
  • Share equally with a partner the responsibilities of supervision and guidance of the group.
  • Assist Activity Specialists in teaching and carrying out activities.
  • Assist with and participate in assigned evening activities under the direction of the staff in charge.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety practices with the cabin to comply with Camp Ozanam, American Camp Association, and the State of Michigan rules
  • including frequently inspecting the facilities with regard to maintenance needs, cleanliness.
  • Be an active listener; understand and respond to the needs and wants of each camper.
  • Provide and actively participate in a daily balanced program that meets camper needs and wants and provides opportunities for each individual to experience success.
  • Maintain a cooperative relationship with cabin-mate and the rest of the staff.
  • Participate in pre-camp and in-season training programs.
  • Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality and participation in clean-up chores, sportsmanship, and manners including participation in camp-wide and team-wide activities.
  • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
  • Follow all camp rules and procedures.
  • Prepare and submit all required paperwork on time, in a neat and professional manner.


Essential Functions

  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups and provide necessary instruction to campers.
  • Visual ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to actively participate in the camp program and to respond appropriately to emergency situations.


The above are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • A genuine liking for children and camp life.
  • At least 18 years of age with emotional maturity, integrity, flexibility and high moral character.
  • Some background and experience in working with children, preferably in a camp setting.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other staff and campers.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance, and to relate to one’s peer group.
