Assist store customers in a friendly and helpful manner and enhance their shopping experience. Support the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager by adhering to the policies and procedures established by St. Vincent de Paul Detroit, and by performing all functions and tasks assigned by the Store Manager / Assistant Store Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet all customers in a friendly, professional, helpful, courteous manner
  • Address customer concerns/complaints effectively and in a timely manner
  • Accept donations and complete paperwork as instructions provide
  • Assist clients in filling referral donations
  • Accurately process customer purchases:
    • Operate cash register
    • Balance cash register draw at the conclusion of shift
    • Maintain cash & change level for cash register
  • Strive to promote and maintain a clean, neat and organized store for appeal to customers; this includes sales floor and backroom
  • Assist with selecting and displaying quality merchandising
  • Assist with other store operations, as needed
  • Monitor inventory level of resale merchandise, both soft line and hard line
  • Ensure the store is highly promotional, well-displayed, well-filled, and easy-to-shop
  • Upon direction from Store Manager, order needed merchandise, not available from direct store donations
  • Adhere to all loss prevention, security and safety standards
  • Assist management with loss prevention and store security
  • Perform store opening and/or store closing when called upon by Store Manager or Assistant Store Manager
  • Work well in collaboration with other store employees and volunteers.
  • Assist with other store operations, as needed, or as may be assigned


Requirements

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Education / Experience

  • Prior retail experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Excellent customer service skills including experience in assisting all customers and donors in a friendly, professional, courteous manner
  • Sales, Merchandising, Marketing skills preferred, but not required
  • Retail cash handling experience and reliability
  • Leadership skills including ability to motivate a diverse peer group


Language Skills

Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills needed to write clear, concise memos, reports, and analyses. Ability to speak clearly and effectively with customers, other employees and store volunteers.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure and demonstrated ability to use a calculator and cash register.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Must utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills daily.

Accountability

  • Exemplify the elements of SVdP: Spirituality, Friendship and Service in all phases of work.
  • Advance the mission, goals and objectives in all applicable SVDP strategic plans.
  • Support the Rule and By-Laws of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul as exemplified by Blessed Frederick Ozanam.
  • Ensure policies and procedures of SVdPD are followed by all co-workers and report any violations to the Store Manager / Assistant Store Manager

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, hear and drive. Manual work, inside and/or outside, is required at times. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

The noise level is quiet to moderate.
