SUCCESS STORY Paul Hill, Ozanam Camper ’38
“Well it has been approximately 80 years ago that I was one of the very lucky Assumption Grotto Church recipients of the one week of camping. In 2017, for the first time, I re-visited the camp on a visitor's day and found myself more grateful for whoever selected me so many years ago to attend this Camp. During the 1930's we rode on Street-Cars but only within the city limits. This large bus picked us up at the Assumption Grotto Church where the adventure began. The trip up Gratiot Ave. to the Camp and the big Lake was more than a treat. I remember the swimming routine of everybody had to have a buddy and every time the councilor's whistle blew we had to hold our buddy's hand up high. Everyone was poor by today's standards, so I really enjoyed the camp policy was that in the evening we could have as many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that we wanted. The chapel seems to be about the same and I do remember serving Mass one morning. I am sure my Mother and Dad were grateful, but reminiscing last year, I could not find the words to express my thanks from so many years ago. An experience that I had forgotten until I joined the SVDP. I hope this camp experience can continue to excite the under privileged for many years to come.”
