A Store Volunteer’s Fresh Start
Sometimes the neighbors who need help most are right in front of us. In November 2024, a UCNECT director approached one of our store managers with concerns about a young volunteer who had been faithfully working at our store three days a week. The dedicated student's family was living in a hotel, and she was facing bullying at school due to her appearance and hygiene challenges.
"She was such a committed volunteer, always showing up with a smile despite what she was going through," recalls the store manager. "When we learned about her situation, we knew we had to act quickly."
The team immediately mobilized, selecting clothing from the store inventory and gathering hygiene products for the student and her siblings. Going beyond the basics, a staff member's brother, who owns a local hair salon, donated his services to provide makeovers for both the young woman and her mother—a simple gesture meant to help them feel valued and special during a difficult time.
Two weeks later, the mother and daughter returned to the store with wonderful news: they had secured permanent housing. They thanked the team for caring enough to help when they needed it most.
"There is no better feeling than helping someone in need," reflected the store manager. This story exemplifies how the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Detroit's network of support extends beyond traditional assistance programs, creating moments of dignity and hope for neighbors in our community.
