Nourishing Hope

The Matchan Nutrition Center serves as more than a place for hot meals—it's a cornerstone of support that helps neighbors rebuild their lives and gives back to the community that sustained them.

This spirit of giving back is exemplified by two dedicated volunteers at the center. Both women had previously relied on the Matchan Nutrition Center for clothing and food during difficult periods in their own lives. Now, grateful for the support they received when they needed it most, they volunteer their time to help others understand and address the struggles within the Pontiac community.

The center's comprehensive approach transforms entire families. One couple with four children was living in their car without employment or assistance for food. Through the collaboration between the Matchan Nutrition Center and Michigan Works, the family secured employment and stable housing. Today, they live in a home with a yard where their children can play, attend a wonderful school, and enjoy both stocked refrigerators and hot meals. Though they no longer need services, they return to visit and express gratitude for the support that proved essential during their time of greatest need.

For a single mother with a two-year-old daughter who had nowhere to turn for guidance, the center provided the stability needed to rebuild. With her daughter now in daycare, the mother works full-time and they have secured their own home.

The center also serves individual neighbors facing homelessness. When one man needed shelter, staff made calls to secure housing and provided clothing for his new job, along with hot meals and toiletries to help him get back on his feet.

These stories demonstrate how the Matchan Nutrition Center creates a cycle of hope—meeting immediate needs while building pathways to long-term stability and inspiring those who have been helped to help others in turn.
