SUCCESS STORY Keeping the Lights On, and the Faith Strong
Mrs. H spent her career working for the State of Michigan, and after retiring, she stayed active in her community, joining a senior center to connect with others and explore her love of art and sewing. But as energy costs climbed, she found herself struggling to keep up with her own utility bills.
Mrs. H first heard about SVdP Detroit’s Energy Assistance Program while taking a budgeting class to strengthen her financial footing. With the rising cost of energy weighing on her household, she reached out for help.
The Energy Assistance Program was able to assist her with a one-time payment of about $500, enough to prevent a shutoff and avert a crisis in her home.
“I try not to stress when times get difficult, and with SVdP Detroit’s help, I was able to manage my household finances without getting nervous or upset about my situation,” Mrs. H said. “Always have faith that there will always be an answer or solution to your problems if you seek it. Be positive and know that somebody will be there to help you through hard times.”
Today, Mrs. H continues to enjoy time with her three grandsons and two great-grandchildren, and to pursue her creative passions at the senior center, with one less financial worry weighing on her days.
